He's a financial analyst for Wells Fargo. When I casually mentioned that my new job has a crappy 401k match (2%), he said that investing in a 401k even with a match is a waste of money since the match just covers any fees associated with the 401k. He claimed that since you typically only get an average return of 6-8% with a 401k and you can make up to 60% with personal investments, investing with an employer sponsored match is a waste. He owns and rents out a few properties... and he has his master's in finance. But this is against everything I've ever read about investing. I've only gone on a few dates with him, so he could just be blowing smoke out his behind. Any truth to what he's saying?
