My SO and I are planning on adopting a dog in late 2018/early 2019. The nearby city has a shelter/pound that adopts animals out for $30 on a first-come, first-serve basis. I know this does not include spay/neuter/vaccinations/other expenses that a rescue or humane society might take care of. Who has had experience adopting from lower-cost shelters? How did your furry (or feathered!) companion turn out? The city says they have a screening process for all of the animals, but I can't imagine it's nearly as extensive as other places. About us: fenced yard, opposite work schedules so the dog has limited hours alone, we can exercise the dog for 1-2 hours per day, prefer older dogs, happy to spend on training because I think it costs less to have a well-trained dog vs one that is not trained.
