Not to post too much of a sob story, but I grew up rather poor, and my family never really had proper winter clothing for our state. I'm not exactly fabulously wealthy now, but I'm willing to spend up to $1000 for winter gear that will keep me warm for a long time. I view it as an investment. If $1000 isn't enough, I'm willing to make compromises of durability (I can't afford much more than $1000 this winter.)
I'm doing university now, at an apartment two miles off campus. I'm not hiking or camping - just walking that round trip every day, mainly on sidewalks which probably won't have more than a foot of snow. My school is in a very windy area and it can get below 0F here.
BIFL, what do you recommend? I searched for a post like this, but I could not find one.
EDIT: Wow, thank you all so much - this has given me a lot to think about!
