I have an interview for a position that I REALLY want today. It is with a company I previously interviewed with and was offered a position for. Unfortunately, I had already accepted another position when I got the offer then so I had to turn it down. I originally interviewed for an assistant director position two years ago. The salary offer I received for that position was 52,000. I am interviewing for a director position today. I assume that since the job I'm interviewing for today is a step up the salary should be much better.

I know they will as what my salary expectations are during this interview. The org is a non-profit and not a huge one. We are in a state with low wages (Alabama). I know that there is a chance they will low ball me and say the position runs in the high 50s. I would like 65,000-75,000 for this position. My current job pays 55,000 so I wouldn't be willing to accept anything too low since whatever job I take next will be a step up and this job is not my only option.

How should I approach discussing the salary here to make it most likely that they will give me a good offer? I found an old post for this exact position online from 3 years ago that lists the salary in 'the mid 50s'. If I am offered mid 50s I will have to decline. How can I make my expectations clear without making it seem like they can't afford me?

I thought about referencing the original offer and saying something like "I was offered low 50s for the assistant director position. Since this position is more advanced and comes with substantially more responsibility I assume the salary is closer to mid 60s to mid 70s and I would be comfortable with that range'. Thoughts on this?

Edit: also,if i respond very vaguely staying im considering the whole package and ask what they are offering and they tell me a number lower than what I'm willing to accept, how should i respond in hopes of prompting an increase?
