Today I called my auto insurer to ask them why my annual policy premium rate went up despite having a clean driving record with no accidents and have been with my insurer for 3+ years. My annual premium had increased an extra $60 per year, which was an extra $5 per month.
The person I first spoke to was in billing who told me that they would have to refer me to an insurance specialist that was certified in my state. I was then transferred to that specialist, who told me that I was already taking advantage of all of the possible deductions for my annual premium (alumni discount, defensive driving credit, etc.) The specialist explained to me that it had to do with my state's rates and laws, having new vehicles on the road that they needed to insure, etc. I wasn't completely sold on their reasons, and had politely asked what the incentive for safe driving was if all I'm going to do is wind up paying more money over time. The specialist then suggested to speak to a policy specialist from my state who had the authority to both review and rewrite policies at new rates. I made it clear to both specialists that I did not want to cancel or alter my policy -- just simply pay less and maintain what I currently had based on my good driving record. I spoke to the policy specialist, they reviewed my policy and record, and they were able to reduce my premium costs even lower than where I started with without changing any coverage in my policy. In the end I wound up having my annual policy reduced by $180 per year (or $15 per month) with no change or impact to the terms of my coverage.
TL;DR - if you have a good driving record and you want to get your premium rates reduced with no impact or change to your auto insurance policy, then try calling your auto insurer and ask for a free policy review for a premium adjustment. I did it, took me 20 minutes, and it's going to save me an extra $15 a month.
