I saw a transaction alert about my debit card being used last night. I called my bank to dispute the transaction. Not really sure if it was an accident or not, so I opted to not have my debit card closed. There was another transaction this morning. I called my bank to dispute and close the card. The bank refunded me the amounts to both transactions.
I literally have no idea how my card could have been compromised. I'm one of the paranoid folks. My debit card never gets used for anything except at the ATM. I will never use a sketchy looking ATM. I only use the big bank ones at a real bank. I grab and wiggle the card readers each time to make sure there's no skimmer. I cover the keypad with my hand during PIN entry and I cover the screen with my body (as much as I can). No one has my passwords. Ever. Not even my wife. Nobody gets to touch my phone. Every financial account I have has 2 factor authentication. My passwords are layered, so that one site getting hacked does not mean they can get into my email accounts to reset passwords.
Questions I tried to ask the bank
- Were these online or physical card transactions? - They could not answer
- Were these entered as credit card or debit card transactions - They could not answer (trying to see if my PIN was compromised too)
I went through all the transactions in my bank account. Everything looked standard.... nothing looks weird. No weird transactions in recent years where my card was used for anything other than an ATM. Does anyone have any suggestions?
EDIT - Is it possible there was a skimmer at the bank doors where you insert your card to get the door opened, after hours? Those are usually flush against the walls so it never occurs to me to try to wiggle or inspect those.
