I see that the culture here is one that aligns more with a self control ideal regarding the reduction of distraction while using a phone. While I agree with that and am pleased to see a group advocate for this perspective so strongly, I do feel that my case is unique enough to warrant revisiting the topic of phones.

After several years of faithful service my Nexus 5 has finally died a peaceful death in its sleep. I am looking for a replacement phone to take up the post. My main needs in a phone are phone calls, light texting, mp3 or other file playback, long battery life, and as cheep as possible. The lack of a GPS is not a problem for me as I really like navigating with maps. I am a Canadian and currently have a $35/month Koodo plan. I would like to cut that down. It feels strange spending the same amount for a weeks groceries as a month of a service I barely use.

My current thinking is that a basic flip phone, perhaps a pay as you go plan, would work quite well for me. I want to open this issue to the table to ask two core questions. Is a flip phone the right option for me or is there a smart phone I'm overlooking? What phone would you choose to use if you were in my shoes.

Thank you all for your time. This is a lovely subreddit.
