After nine years of non-stop social media usage, I finally said goodbye to it.
All of this frustration I had with seeing other people’s daily lives - it turns out I wasn’t the only one feeling it. I just found this subreddit and didn’t think there were other people tuning out social media like I was. And I’m very glad there are.
The first week I was constantly checking my phone for notifications, as if one was gonna pop up - but after that phase, I actually felt relieved. I didn’t feel pressured to look at my phone nearly all the time and had more opportunities to interact and engage with people.
I made one Facebook post stating I’m deactivating everything for good, including IG, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. - and it turns out that two relatives of mine did the same after learning I had done it as well. I no longer felt this absurd need to prove how excellent my life was to random strangers on the internet. I had a moderately large social media presence; I added anyone I met and I had around 1500+ “Friends.” I was so disgusted with myself for contemplating the amount of likes I was gonna lose, but I realized people would stop caring about that in a few weeks or months anyway.
I have never felt more free. And how ironic it is to have to disconnect - yet I have never felt more connected.
