Link to images: https://ift.tt/2uOgKQ5 moved into an old home with an awesome barn in the backyard. I have big plans for the second floor of the barn (bar/lounge/party room), but there are some basic upgrades and safety issues that need to be addressed first.First on my list is to secure the bottom stair and attach a handrail or complete railing of some kind. The bottom stair needs to be replaced completely. It's very loose, not attached to the stringers in any way (not sure if that matters - but there's actually a 3/4" gap between bottom stair and second stair). I would like to rip out the bottom stair and replace it with something much more secure and stable. What would be my best option here, without having to rip out the entire set of stairs and replace with new stringers, etc.? Do I need to pour a concrete pad and then build a new bottom stair on top of that? (would like to avoid concrete if possible). Do I need a jack to raise the stairs an inch or so, in order to get a new bottom stair in place? Or can I just attach a new bottom stair to the stringers, then fill in the ground below it with gravel? (kind of an awkward distance between the ground and the bottom of the stringers)I'm pretty handy and have all the tools needed to get the job done right. But as a first time homeowner, I've never had to deal with stairs. Please help! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2L9r4NN
