Hi everyone, So got myself into quite a predicament here. Sorry, it's long.
I have two separate accounts from two different banks. I am currently on a trip abroad.
Timeline:
June 28th:I was trying to repay a small debt I owed to my brother from my Chase account (he'd lent me money). I didn't have the funds in it to do so, so wrote a check to myself from the smaller bank that had sufficient funds and wanted to deposit it into my Chase (so I could pay him since all his bank info was already stored in my chase account). Seeing as I'm abroad, I asked my brother to deposit the check, and so he put his name on the back as the endorser (which as far as I know is completely legal, right ?).
-I guess one of the banks noticed this, and things happened behind the scenes that ended with the smaller bank attempting to contact me by phone to sort this, which lead nowhere as I am abroad.
-July 3rd, I logon and notice that Chase has rejected the check and charged me a $12 fee. The message that shows for that transaction is basically "ask the other bank".
So I logon to the website of the smaller bank, and see that I am locked out of the account. I call up the number it tells me to call, and give them all the info and unlock my account.
-I then ask them why the check was rejected. They look into it and come back with "when the name at the back was different from those on the front (mine since it was a check from me to me), it go "flagged", they attempted to call me, couldn't get in touch so stopped it from going though just in case.
-Meh, who cares right ? I then send a message to Chase saying this was a big misunderstanding, and please refund me the $12.
-I get an answer back saying "you account has been disabled, contact Fraud prevention". Because of the time difference, I have to push it back to today (huge mistake by the way)
-July 4th: I call the fraud prevention and they basically tell me "Your account is being completely shut down, and there is nothing you can do about it. Don't try to ever open an account with Chase again. Fudge you very much"
What. The. Frick?
So, like what can I do?? This account is where everything gets done !! Where my salary goes, where my rent and daycare is paid from, where all my other credit cards get paid from ... everything ! And I also still have a chunk of money in there !!
I have one credit card that needs paying by the 10th, my rent which was supposed to come out of Chase on the 1rst (it shows as paid, by I fear this total shutdown will result in the landlord thinking I'm stiffing him).
Please help !
TL;DR: wrote sufficiently funded check to myself, brother deposited it, but it got flagged as fraudulent. Chase now treating me like criminal and shutdown my account. What can do ?
Edit: Consensus is that I'm a complete moron, and unwittingly committed a type of fraud, doing myself out of a bank account for who knows how long. Despite the check being written from me, to me, with sufficient funds, Shouldn't have let my brother put his name on the back.
