About 4 years ago, as a freshman in college, I worked a job as a butcher/meat clerk. This job had a strict no facial hair policy so I had to shave each and everyday. I was spending about $10 a month on new blades for my Gillette razor.
Then I saw an ad on YouTube, a young guy advertising cheap razors that would be shipped to you each month. For the first time ever I felt like an ad was speaking directly to me. I bought in immediately.
Fast forward 4 years later and I was still using dollar shave club. I loved getting razors without having to think about it, and the funny little publications that came with it.
Until one day, I gave my girlfriend my extra handle and let her use one of my razors too. She came out of the bathroom a few minutes later and said, “your razors are sh**.”
I got offended at first but then I started to think about it... were my razors indeed, “sh**?”
I started to think about the Gillette days and wondering if it was worth going back, but again, the money got to me. So what if DSC’s razors weren’t quite as sharp, I was saving money right?
Then one day at sams club I discovered wholesale razors for the mach3, running at 1.99 a piece for 13 blades and a handle. I bought it, despite the cost per blade being more than DSC and decided to compare.
That first shave with a Gillette razor in 4 years changed my life. The heavens opened and the angels sang. It was the smoothest shave I had had in years (4 to be exact). There was no irritation by my nose or on my neck, where I always used to get it, and no tugging on my hairs as it shaved. The same can’t be said for DSC.
Today was my third shave with the mach3, using the same blade, and it still shaved smoother than DSC, and with one less blade!
I buy the mach3 in bulk at sams club, and it costs me $2 more per month, but in the long run I’ll save money because of the high quality of the Gillette blades. These blades will last you 5x longer than a dollar shave club razor.
Cheaper doesn’t always mean that it’s saving you money! Quality over quantity folks.
