First off thank you r/personalfinance for helping me get to this point. In February i was promoted to a new position, but when promoted I wasn’t given a raise because I received one on January, but the new position was significantly more responsibility and work. After a couple of weeks in the position I asked my boss for a raise and he responded that I’m making what the previous person in the position was making. I let it be. I continued to take on more and more responsibilities and was constantly told how much better I was than the previous employee. I ran my department and actually started taking over responsibilities from other departments. I posted on here and everyone told me to contact the previous employee to find out how much they were making. After a few months I finally did, and found out she was making about $3 an hour more than me. And everyone suggested I find a new job.

I started applying and in about a week I got an offer making $5 more an hour for a direct competitor. I told my boss about the offer today and at the end of the day he offered me $3 more an hour, I didn’t take it and told him I guess I’d consider it, and he immediately says well we can still negotiate. Basically I took that as I can still get them to match the offer.

So here are the factors I need to consider: 1. I’m a single parent of 4 children (my mother helps me out a ton) and the new job would require that I train an hour and a half away for about a month.

  1. The new job is about 20-30 farther than my current job (with traffic) which means I couldn’t work that extra hour over time most days.

3 new job is for a much larger company (more potential for growth)

4 new job told me I would be groomed to become a project manager (what I’d ultimately like to be doing)

5 current employer is incredibly flexible with my schedule. Basically if I get my job done it doesn’t matter when I have to leave for kids appointment and sick days and what not

  1. I had a personal break down a while back and my current employer was incredibly supportive and reassured me I’d have a job when I was ready. (This is probably the biggest reason I’m considering staying).

  2. I know I’m doing great at my current position. What if I struggle in my new position?

Any input would be appreciated.

Tl;dr offered a new job making $5 more an hour, current employer offered $3 more but implied they might match. New job has more potential for growth, old job is convenient and comfortable.
