I picked up a cool 'mid century' (but probably more deco idk these things?) desk on craigslist. I thought it was all metal so I could work with that easy, but it's actually metal with some sort of plastic/leather/vinyl surface to it. I took it anyway but really have no idea how to work with this thing now.Pictures here... not sure they help much thoughOriginally thought it was just dried out leather, as I've seen that on antique desktops a lot. But I'm fairly certain its not leather and is instead some very hard plastic or possibly vinyl (assuming desk is roughly 80s but I don't know this stuff). Ideally I want the whole plastic crap off down to metal below, but I don't think thats how this desk works (dont see anyway to remove, it is the desk surface). So any tips on how I can work with this thing? How can I be certain what the top is so I know how to fill in chips/paint itIf plastic/vinyl I assume I can paint (krylon fusion), but how can I fill in the marks? Is polyurethane or some other sealer an option for a smoother surface?Just brainstorming, very used to working with wood/metal but this is throwing me off. Planned on sanding down metal, painting with a bare metal look mixed with black... Now not sure.If all else fails I will use as a workbench in the garage, but such a cool piece it deserves better. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2JvGydl
