I have a 2008 Nissan Versa. Good car, solid bones, worth about $5000 or so.
A while back we had a hailstorm of biblical proportions. Cataclysmic.
Our good family SUV, a 2011 Kia Sorento was in the garage thankfully but the Versa...well it got the crap kicked out of it.
It looked like someone had beaten it with a ball peen hammer.
At first I was bummed because it was basically worthless. I knew I’d get some insurance $ for it, but it would be a pain to find such a solid car and one that I knew so well (we’re the original owners).
I was talking with a buddy who’s a car guy and he tells me you can negotiate your settlement. So I researched it and sure enough, you can get comparable vehicles to try to persuade the insurance co. to give you more.
You can also negotiate if the vehicle is a write off due to cosmetic damage and not structural (so it hasn’t been in an accident) to get them to not put a write off note on the registration.
So that’s what I did. I ended up get significantly more money for my vehicle than it was probably worth, and there was no write off note attached.
So I got close to $6000 for my car, I get to keep driving it (it runs fine) and I could probably sell it for $2000 with the damage.
All in all, a pretty killer deal!
Only drawback is the car looks like junk, but I drive it as a badge of frugal honor!!
