Hi Reddit, I want to ask for a raise and have never done this before, so I thought I’d post my plan on the Internet to have it evaluated.

Background: I graduated college in May 2017 and ended up getting laid off from my first job making $35k a year. Long story short I’ve been in my current position (Digital Communications Manager) for about 8 months at a salary level of $47k. Including my current position I have a combination of three years of experience in public relations, marketing & advertising, social media management and content creation/management. Additionally I worked in restaurants for six years and this is pertinent experience to the company I work for. During my interview they were ecstatic to see my hospitality work background.

Edit: If it contextually helps, I live in central CA in a city. Average rent here for a 1 bedroom apartment is between $1000-$1500 a month.

I’m a jack of all trades and I self-teach anything I don’t already know how to do. Obviously I wouldn't tell you guys, “I’m only ok at my job...” I genuinely believe I do excellent work.

When I accepted this position and the offer of my salary I was desperate for a job and I kick myself for not negotiating my salary more since they offered me a lower salary than the one posted. When the job was posted they included a range of $50k-$65k depending on experience.

During my review in February (my company does an annual review every February no matter when your anniversary date is - mine is in October) my supervisor was pleased with all of my work and especially noted that I am a pleasure to work with and have a great attitude. I had planned to ask for a raise during the review but had a lot of family things going on and unfortunately took a lot of PTO right around the same time. I thought it would be better to wait since I’d been out of the office a lot.

I have done research on Glassdoor, Payscale and Salary to find supporting statistics for local salary averages finding that the median salary for someone in my position and with my experience is $77k, with some making six figures. I know that I’m still a young person in my career and that average salary increases are between 2%-5% but I also strongly believe I can be making more and that I deserve to make more. My responsibilities and skills continue to grow and evolve here and I’d like to keep it that way. I’ve job searched to see salary levels I am eligible for and have noted they are in the $60k range as well. I wouldn’t want to leave my job but if I could be worth more elsewhere I might consider it.

I’m going to prepare a brief presentation stating the growth/evolution of my position and abilities, the benefits I’ve brought to the table at my company and quantifiable metrics, as well as my market worth research and I plan to approach my supervisor about it soon. I will be requesting consideration of a salary between $60k-$67k and would be happy to accept $56k-$58k. Is this the best course of action? Would it be better not to highball like that?
