First off, I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place I don’t typically post on reddit.
Now, my dilemma.
I signed up for the spring semester of 2018 in October or so of last year. I found out in December that I was getting hired to a job that I just absolutely couldn’t pass up on. Way above my level and the pay is beyond what I went in for or could’ve asked for (for someone who spent 3 years as a hostess and waitress anyway).
I hadn’t yet paid for the semester and started receiving emails from my college stating that if I didn’t pay by the deadline I would be dropped from my classes. Cool! I can never remember all my portal passwords and stuff. Everything works out.
Deadline comes and goes, I get more emails stating, “Hey! Seems you missed the deadline but no worries because we’re extending it for you! But friendly reminder, if you don’t pay by the new deadline, you will be dropped.”
Awesome. I delete the emails, start my new job, and continue with my life. I call bursar once to make sure and they transfer me to someone in registrar who says the same thing. I’m good.
By the end of the semester I would’ve attended had I not been told repeatedly I would be dropped, I started getting letters and calls saying that I owed the school the $3500 which was way past due and that I could be sent to collections.
I tell multiple people my story and they all say oh well too bad because that’s not a real thing you have to manually drop those classes. So because of one incompetent person and I guess me deleting my emails that held my proof (side note, I’m not also locked out of that email account because it’s a school one and I’m no longer considered a student) I’m now stuck with a $3500 bill for a semester I did not attend.
Can I do anything? Or do I just pay the sum. I finally was able to take my first day off of work today and am going to go to bursar to speak to someone in person. I can’t pay this money and even their payment plan won’t help me. Also I just think it’s ridiculous to pay for classes I didn’t set foot in once.
Thanks for any and all advice. I’m just trying to save money and have just really put a dent into all my previous debt, I just can’t afford anymore. Thank you!
