I already asked the question in the Bogleheads sub, but no one replied.
I ran the backtest using PortfolioVisualizer.com and I found out that before 2000, VFINX paid dividend significantly higher than what SPY did; however, the total returns were nearly identical.
I am wondering why this is the case. Did VFINX distribute some of its capital gain back to investors? Thank you!
