Hi all,

I currently work as a contractor (writer) full-time with a big company, technically employed by a staffing agency. I make good money, and I like the work, but I'm basically only doing the jobs other people don't want, so they give me, and I'm not eligible for PTO. So when my manager told me to apply for a regular position, I jumped on it, and luckily I got (offered) it!

I currently make $24 an hour. When I applied for the contract job, I saved the posting, and saw that the hiring range went up to $26 an hour so I asked for that in my application. Most of the people in my department answer emails at home and stay later than I do, so I assumed I would not be overtime eligible and needed a high base pay (I'd still like the high base pay!) but it turns out I'm eligible for overtime.

So I got the job offer yesterday and they offered $22 an hour. Whomp whomp. But it is over time eligible and they match 100% on the first 3% of 401k contributions and 50% on the next 2%, and I would get paid time off (I'm going to ask if I can retroactively accumulate PTO from when I started working there a month ago).

But I have no idea how to negotiate a job that you can get over time for - every job I've worked up until now has been part-time, work-study, or contract. Can I ask how easy it is to get overtime approved? The average hours worked? Whether I get to clock in to answer emails? I don't even know if I'll get overtime, though it seems my coworkers tend to work at least 45 hours a week.

Also, for reference, I was making $17 an hour at a similar job at a smaller company in the same field right next door - so this pays very well for my area.

tl;dr: If you're eligible to receive overtime, do you negotiate your salary differently? I'm worried that the HR person will use that as a talking point on Tuesday when I call and I have no experience with anything but hourly work. I don't want to go in on the wrong side of an information slant.
