Years ago, I rented a textbook online for school. Shortly after, I lost the book and never mailed the book back. I received many emails and phone calls about returning the book but never replied or answered because I was younger and did not think it was that big of a deal (dumb I know) Eventually, I was sent to a collections agency (FCR Collections Agency). 2 years later, I’m working on building up my credit score which is pretty good right now (743). I’m planning on buying my first car soon but I had completely forgotten my debt with the collections agency. I found the emails I received from the collections agency and they gave me a website paymybalance.com where I could pay off the debt I owe, which is $174 with a $50 collections fee. The newest email I received from them was in June 2017 and they said they would take my debt to a law office if I didn’t pay soon. I want to pay my debt on the website in full with my debit card, but I’ve heard that you should not pay off a collections agency with a debit card because they will take more money out of your card and take advantage. I want to know if paying the collections agency with my debit card is a bad idea, if this will highly affect my credit score, and if it will affect my chances of getting a car. Any advice about paying off a collection is appreciated, thank you!
