I thought I'd share my tips for enjoying video games without breaking the bank, and would be interested to hear everyone else's tips too!

I buy pre-owned games wherever possible, unless I particularly care about a collectible or a code that comes with the game. I play the game and then trade it back in for store credit whenever I'm done with it, to pay for the next game. The store I trade in with will do a match with the best trade in price in town so often you lose very little value on a trade in and even occasionally gain from it. As such, I almost never purchase my content digitally because I wouldn't be able to do this.

I keep collectibles in their original packaging. I don't go for collectibles in a big way, but when I do I keep the item in original packaging which makes it easier to sell on. I sold an amiibo card (sealed) which came with Pokken Tournament for £10 on its own and traded the game separately. If the card was unsealed the price would have been more like £1.

I make use of a staff discount at the game store. I realise this isn't available to everyone, however my girlfriend works at a video game store so I can get staff discount on games and consoles anywhere from 5-20% depending on the item. Biggest discounts are on pre-owned stuff. I've even known people take one shift a week just to get advantage of the staff discount.

I buy a year of PS+ when it's on sale and have never paid full price for it. I play online a lot and so get good value from this. I'm rarely impressed by the free games though.
-
I trade and share games with my friends, especially for things we aren't super bothered about playing on launch.
-
My local library stocks some older games (ps3 backwards mostly) which I rent for a week at a time completely free.
-
If I'm not using something and won't be using it any time soon, I trade it in at a game store or I sell it on eBay.
-
I keep my consoles and PC clean and dust free and try to take good care of everything. Air dusters are ideal.
-
I don't buy extended warranties because my contents insurance already covers my consoles. Even if it didn't, I wouldn't buy an extended warranty in store.
-
I fix things myself when I can, but only when they're outside of manufacturer warranty.
