I work for a California-based company; however I live on the East Coast. I do travel to California for sales meetings once or twice a year. Since most of the time spent in California is playing golf or going out to dinner with colleagues, it would be a stretch to call it work. I got a notice from California tax authorities, that they believe I owe California income tax for 2016. I work entirely off commission and get paid with a 1099 and am responsible for my own taxes. I'm not sure how best to approach this matter. I've long filed and paid 2016 federal and state taxes. I'd have to look back at hotel/flight receipts to tally up total days in California. At least 6 of these days were on the weekends. Many of these work days were half meetings and half golfing. I'm guessing that since my employer is CA-based and my 1099 was large enough, this is somewhat of an autoform and fishing expedition by CA tax authorities. But I don't want to just ignore it.
