So basically I started to teach myself at home beauty treatments when I left school and my parents would no longer pay for haircuts because I didn’t need them for school or whatever. One of my good friends went on to study hairdressing and on my days off I’d go in to college to be her guinea pig, which was when I realised the things they charge £80 plus for in a salon you can literally do at home for £5. I used to get her to talk through what she was doing- it was great revision for her and it was good learning for me. I bought a box of hair foil in Poundland and a box of at hair dye for about £6 and off I went into the big scary world of home highlights. I’ve not dyed my hair for a while now because of health reasons, but it’s a useful skill to have if you’re into hair and beauty.
From there I started to look into what else I could do at home- fake tan is like £4 a bottle in Superdrug, a tanning mitt I picked up for £1. £30 saved on a spray tan (not that I ever indulged in that....). I paid £35 for a gel nail starter kit on amazon and with the help of YouTube taught myself how to apply gel nails- a luxury I would never afford otherwise. I have learned to tint my own eyebrows, another £8 or £9 saved. I learned to shape my own brows. I learned how to ‘dermaplane’ with an eyebrow razor. I did dabble in at home waxing, but honestly it’s such a faff it’s not worth it.
I feel like I’m rambling a bit but my point is- there isn’t much point in spending a lot of money on a regular basis on beauty treatments. With practice you can do most of it at home for a fraction of the cost.
