I am a habitual saver. Whether it be in a quarter jar, emergency savings, 401(k); I do it all. This came in super handy this week when a close friend and I were in the final stages of signing a lease together. My friend's lease is about to expire and he needed someone to live with him, which is where I came in. We already applied for an apartment, and sure enough got the place we wanted. My friend, however, didn't expect the SD, 1st rent and Broker fee to be paid right away (move in July 1st). He got his lease extended a month to accommodate the new move in date, and had to pay rent this week.
I could tell he was overwhelmed and needed more time to come up with the cash, so without much hesitation I offered to put up a little more so he could have time to gather the money and pay me back when he can (he gets his SD from his other apartment back at the end of the month).
If neither of us had this type of savings, we could've been looking at losing this apartment. Luckily that wasn't the case, and this was only a minor speed bump.
