I am a 500 index investor, but my State's (NY) 529 plan does not offer the 500 index fund. Is there a way to mimic the performance of the 500 index fund by purchasing a blend of other funds? Sort of a synthetic 500 index.

I read somewhere that the Vanguard growth fund (VIGRX) and value fund (VIVAX) are essentially the 500 index, split into 2 categories. So, one can buy VIGRX and VIVAX 50/50 and will essentially have a synthetic VFIAX. Is this true?
