Long time lurker that needs financial advice per current situation. Title is mildly misleading. Advice needed on whether I should go ahead or not.

Details: 1) I am a 23 year old, graduated out of school 2 years, living in Chicago. 2) I make 65k/yr, I spend 1.2k/month on rent 3) I haven’t gotten braces as a child, I have always wanted to get braces for my front two teeth, they are not completely horrible, I have what’s more of a overjet/overbite that need to be “pushed in”, which also means a little bit of jaw reshaping. My teeth have begun to overlap, and it apparently slowly but progressively is going to get worse because of how it currently is. 4) I went for two Invisalign consultations, got quoted for 5k (for 1 year’s worth of work) 5) An out-of-Network orthodontist quoted 4.5k for braces, for same time period (1 year) 6) I am currently on a DMO dental insurance that technically covers adult braces up to 2k, yet to go to a good in-network orthodontist who would consider braces as an option, and I am not sure how much of it would be covered/what are the criteria for me to be eligible for that 2k.

Current position: I saved up 5k for this. I am inclined to go with Invisalign as it’s more inconspicuous/less embarrassing. I would rather get it done now than later as it’s something I have wanted to fix for a while, and I believe MIGHT be something I would consider to do even through later years (30s, 40s). However, 5k is a good amount, I could save/invest. I feel like I am “stealing” a larger future money from myself by committing to a 5k expenditure now.

Is it worth going for semi-cosmetic, semi-health expenditure worth 5k that’s (unfortunately) time dependent as in, more likely to cost me more in the future as overlapping, overcrowding would increase?
