Hey folks! I've been in my New England house for a few years and I've been meaning to renovate the finished half of my basement. The top of the walls are drywall, but the bottom four feet of the walls are carpeted (?). The floor is carpeted and it's terrible--super thin, low quality, scratchy.I'd like to make the walls all drywall (or split with wood plank). I'd like to replace the floor with engineered hardwood.See pictures from the link below. There are two problems relating to the foundation that have me worried: 1) There are cracks coming from the basement window corners that extend all the way to the floor. There is evidence of prior wetness, but nothing recent. I have a fear that they may have originally put in the carpeted walls to deal with the wetness. 2) The floor isn't level. For instance there is a lally column towards the center of the room, and the floor tends to slope up as it approaches the column.https://ift.tt/2H1FfhH started pulling back the carpeting on the walls to reveal what is behind it. I assume the wood structure that is present could be used for hanging drywall (I haven't hung drywall before). Thanks for any advice. And opinions about wood plank versus drywall. (Also, there's room for foam insulation board but none is used now. Any thoughts?)About me: I have a pretty standard toolset. Compound miter saw, all sorts of hand tools, electrician stuff. I have some basic experience. I designed and built a Catio from mainly 2x3s. Made a workbench out of 2x4s. I replace my own cedar siding each year (the boards that are rotting). Plus a bunch of electrical work. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2vjqJAA
