I am kind of handy, but I am by no means a professional. That said, I have hung 4 ceiling fans throughout my house quite successfully, after having an electrician run the wiring and mount the electrical box. I've always seen the 2X4 beam that the electrical box is mounted to, that runs between the joists, mounted vertically, like this: https://ift.tt/2JEp4aZ recently had a front porch installed by a contractor and I asked for two ceiling fan electrical boxes to be installed so I can later install my own fans. When I went to install the fans, I actually had to replace an electrical box for another reason, but when I did I noticed the 2X4 beam was installed horizontally. Here is a drawing of the cross-sectional view of what I mean by "vertically" and "horizontally": https://ift.tt/2ranpmW, I thought this was odd, since I have never seen it this way before, and I called up the contractor to ask if this was done correctly and up to code. He assured me that it was all good and I continued to hang my fans. Now, the fans are up but they wobble on the medium and high speeds. Loudly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LMj-UQuLZw I followed the fan instructions perfectly. I triple checked every screw for tightness on both fans. I even tried the annoying balance kit that came with the fan. The only thing I can think of is that horizontally mounted beam. Here is my question: Is the way the contractor mounted the 2X4 correct? Safe? Up to code? If it violates a code or anything, is there a citation I can use to bring to him to fix it? Any other suggestions on how to fix this wobble?Thank you in advance. via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2FtiHFb
