I live in a shared housing situation with two other roommates in an older single family home. The landlord does not live in the house and I found this house on Craigslist.

Since I have been living here the longest out of my roommates, the landlord lets me pay a discounted rent ($25 less than original amount) for helping her and letting her know of any problems and to help her find new roommates if we need new one.

A new roommate moved in about 2 months ago and I noticed he does laundry a lot. It doesn't bother me really , but the landlord called me 3-4 days ago wondering why her water bill is so high last month. It is important to note that my roommates and I do not pay for any utilities, so we are getting a good deal already. When talking with my landlord about the water bill, she asked if I saw any leaks or see any reason why the water bill went high all of a sudden. I told her I would investigate and do some research first. She is calling a plumber and he'll check the pipes/drainage later this week.

I saw my roommate doing laundry again today (very odd considering he did it 2 days ago) and now I am starting to think that frequent washer use is causing the water bill to go high. I believe he washed 5-6 loads last week. Before I confront anyone about this, I want to be sure if using the washing machine does increase the water bill or not. Besides a washing machine, what else increases the water bill? Is it a possibility that my roommate is increasing the water bill with his frequent laundry. Thanks for the advice!
