Renting an old apartment that has very thin crappy old windows, some have big gaps between the wood and the window frames. The whole apartment is very drafty and cold. Winter has just arrived here (Australia) and I don’t want to have to run plug in heaters 24/7 for the heat to be sucked right out of the windows. Want to avoid a large electricity bill.

How can I cheaply insulate the windows while still maintaining some natural light? I don’t care how it looks. I thought about taping bubble wrap and plastic sheets over them, and duct taping around the frames. And maybe some thick cardboard over the worst offending windows. Would this work?

I have a lot of windows, a sliding glass door and an entire wall of floor to ceiling glass. So any solution I can think of always ends up being too expensive when I work out how much glass I need to cover.

I hate glass! Lesson learnt, will be looking for thick walls and tiny windows next time around.
