Hello there r/DIY,I'm generally pretty handy, but this is a delicate project and I want to be sure that I do it right the first time, so I would really appreciate any advice y'all can throw my way.I spent the weekend cleaning out my mother's shed (which was my grandparents' shed a long time ago), and found a ton of family heirlooms and old antiques that had just been rotting away for decades. Up in the rafters, we found three old military footlockers, one of which was the one my Grandfather took with him in WWIIObviously, it's not in the greatest condition, but it's not in terrible shape either. I've cleaned it up with some warm water and soap, trying not to chip away any more paint, and I would like to know the best way to preserve the panels just as they are. The top is covered with the trunk's shipping address (in my grandfather's handwriting) and the sides have the paper shipping forms still attached. What kind of epoxy seal can I use to cover this in order to preserve it?The metal locks and edges are also in good shape, but quite rusty. I'm planning on sanding off the rust, coating them in metal primer, and then painting them with Rust-o-leum paint. Is this a good idea, or is there a better way to go about it?Thanks in advance! via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2JoHq0s
