Hunt around for free substitutes or replacements. It's a fun mental game and rewarding even if it's just for the sport.
Often, I notice that a single replacement is not possible and I end up using two or more products/services to replace the features of the single paid item or service.
For me, this is most often the case with software. Some freemium apps or software have overlapping features sets which are locked down differently (or lacking), so you can use both...if you are willing to switch back and forth between them. Examples: iOS (Antenna + BaconReader); macOS (Commander One + trolCommander), etc.
What are your favourite combos (products, services, software, etc.)? Do you cherry pick among features or have you found clever ways to rig them together?
