The fiancee and I have been planning a rtw for some time now, and as of yesterday, we have both given our letters of resignation to our bosses. We will travel from May until sometime next year and then return to our home country to settle down and also resume work.
When I informed my boss about my intention to resign, he gave me the offer to instead write a letter to the management to request for an extended, unpaid leave of absence for the duration I'm planning instead of outright resigning. He mentioned that they were planning on giving me a promotion in June, and if I do choose to return, I would be able to return to my job in that promoted position and continue my career with the company where I left off. I've been with the company for just shy of 6 years and know how they operate, so I can take his word on this.
I am not resigning out of any dissatisfaction of working at said company (just wanted to travel for an extended period of time) so I'm planning on taking this offer. I won't be bound by anything but assuming there are no drastic changes on both my end and the company's end, I should be able to expect sound employment when I return which will make the return to normal life much smoother. The boss mentioned he understands nothing is set in stone, so if I do truly change my mind when I return, so be it.
With that being said, can anyone share their advice with me about what sorts of things I should consider to include in such a letter? Our office is not necessarily small/big, but we don't have any formal structure for this sort of thing so I would need to figure out what to put in.
To start, I'd imagine I'd include:
- being able to continue at the promoted position
- salary increase congruent with the promotion (also perhaps a certain % salary increase based on inflation?)
- vacation time increase congruent with promotion (any thoughts on how to treat the leave that I will not be using during my unpaid leave? is it illogical to ask for that unused paid leave to be rolled over to the next year? i've already prorated my leave for the year based on the number of months working this year and have used those)
- continuation of work visa (this would make getting travel insurance and maintaining health insurance A LOT easier compared to having to get a US travel/health insurance)
- continuity in years of employment at the company <-- not sure how to phrase this
Thank you everyone in advance!
