For those of you who don't already know, WinCo Foods, Inc. is a privately held, majority employee-owned American supermarket chain based in Boise, Idaho with retail stores in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington. (Got that straight from Wikipedia, hah!) I simply adore the store, as I can get some amazing deals on foods. Best of all is their produce and bulk foods section. I thought I would share a few of my recent purchases - if you live near one of these stores but have yet to check them out, I hope that you change your mind and check them out!
Soft Beef Pet Treats - $2.52 lb - These are certainly not the healthiest thing in the world, but my dog adores them. Nothing motivates him on his leash better than these. For the price, they are by far the cheapest and most successful treat I've ever gotten for him - our walks are much nicer now!
Leeks - $2.78 for 3 - This is about 1/2 the price of my corner grocer, so I'm pretty stoked. Leeks are usually out of my price range.
Navy Beans (bulk) - $0.78 lb - My family loves beans. My budget loves beans. I love being able to purchase what I need, rather than buying them in 1 lb bags and having 1/3 cup of leftover dried beans taking up space in my pantry.
Canned, diced tomatoes - $0.88 for 28 oz - We love making chili, minestrone, all kinds of things like that. Having a can or two of tomato product on hand is always nice, and the price is right! If I don't need the whole can, I freeze the rest to use in soup another time.
Chickpeas (bulk) - $0.68 lb - I promise that if you learn to make hummus, you will be in love. It's so simple and so cheap. If you like it reeeeaaalllly smooth, cook the beans with a just a little baking soda, or you can always painstakingly peel the skin off of each bean. I have a pretty good food processor, so mine turns out rather well.
English Cucumbers - $2.64 for 3 - We like to make Som Tom with cucumbers, as well as sliced and sprinkled with Tajin. English cucumbers are so much better than regular, but they usually sell for $2.99 at my local grocery.
Dried Rosemary (bulk) - $0.06 for about 1/4 cup - Buy bulk spices. Just do it. You can buy what you need, you can refill your current spice jars, but you will do it at a fraction of the cost of the stuff on the shelf.
Everything I get there is generally cheaper than I can find elsewhere. Sometimes I can get it cheaper at WalMart, but I try to limit the stops I make on shopping days. My time is worth too much, and more stops mean more impulse buys.
Also, sorry to the Mods if I broke the rules! I hope this doesn't count as promotional material, as I am just a fan of cheap stuff.
