I currently live in an outer suburb of Atlanta, GA (my job is in Kennesaw, and I live in a further suburb from there). I work as a software engineering lead and make ~$90k a year base, plus I have good benefits (fully covered medical insurance and premiums for my whole family, profit sharing, professional development dollars, defined benefit pension plan, 5% full 401k match, free breakfast/lunch, etc.). I recently got a raise from ~$60k, so my saving rate has gone up over the last half a year. I'm graduated college almost 3 years ago, so I'm still in my early 20s.

I live quite frugally. I have an easy, 20 minute commute (30 minutes on a Friday afternoon if I leave at the wrong time). Expenses are low: $600/mo mortgage on a 1500 sq foot house with a 1 acre plot; $70/mo electric; $30/mo water; $25/mo phone (my phone is paid for, this is my wife); $100/mo gas; no car payments; $200/mo food; $60/mo Internet. Even with discretionary spending now and then, I put away ~$4k/mo into savings right now.

My wife is finishing her MAT (about $800/semester after scholarships) and hopes to be a high school teacher within 1 year.

All of this said, I want to know what amount of money I need to have a similar standard of life in Silicon Valley. Owning a house is not necessary, though I would like some privacy and a good commute. I was recently out west and visited with several companies, and I’ve been a bit bored and comfortable in my position. I’ve met with a few companies and have some other good connections, and I think I am interested in trying that lifestyle, area, and really some new technical challenges. Most of the companies I was looking at were in southern suburbs of San Jose. There might be some companies I could try in Atlanta, but I think we’re ready for a change.

I wanted to get an idea of how much my salary equates to in this area. Has anyone made a similar move to the area?
