Walmart just announced that they’re doing a major expansion of their home delivery of groceries option. $9.95 and the “cart” must have $30 or more of groceries.
I used Instacart (free trial) when I was sick for a week this year. I thought it was pretty cool. What you miss in physically hand picking produce you like you kind of make up in the sense of overall convenience. Instacart is expanding in my area and people seem to love it.
On the other hand, Amazon pulled back on its Fresh service at the end of last year. Whole Foods hasn’t been as completely integrated as people thought. Amazon seems to still be pushing forward, but it definitely hit some hurdles.
Overall, it seems like retailers are struggling with the concept of grocery home delivery. Why is that? Is it because groceries have a shorter shelf life? Harder to inventory?
