Im totally board of life, board of my JOB and don't feel very fulfilled. Ive had a deep sense of wanderlust for quiet some time now and want to go traveling for a year. Maybe even teach English for a year after that if I enjoy the international lifestyle.

The reasons that are stopping me are:

  • If I go traveling at 31 for a year ill be effectively leaving home, so when I return to the UK ill have higher living expenses
  • I'm worried that it will be difficult to find work again. This fear is due to me only working at one company for so long. Although Im probably competitive at my salary level. Ive done many jobs so im a jack of trades master of none.
  • I'm worried that due to the economic concept of 'time value of money' ill be setting my compounded savings amount very far behind in life. Making early retirement much harder.

Financial Details:

  • Net worth 80k
  • Debt: 0
  • Salary 27k (unfulfilling career)
  • Estimated cost of trip 20k

I don't want to be a slave to compounding interest but equally I don't want to be foolish with responsible decisions. Is traveling a waste of money and a foolish financial decision? Or should I follow my passion and see where I end up.
