Vladeck, now a professor at Georgetown Law, said violations of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation, meaning that if news reports that the data of 50 million people were shared proves true, the company’s possible exposure runs into the trillions of dollars.
Obviously, a fine of over a trillion dollars is extremely unlikely, but the fact that that is even a possibility or a though on the table is nuts. Regardless, this should hit Facebook quite hard, not only from a fine perspective, but also from the perspective of trust from advertisers and users as well.
