I was paying $52/mo for 75 mbps downloading and never really considered if I needed that much - I just thought faster was better because I hate buffering or waiting and I watch all of my TV via Netflix or Hulu. Well after a little research I found that according to Netflix and YouTube you only need 5mbps per stream to watch in HD. So I went to the $40/mo plan that offers 25mbps and I have noticed zero difference when streaming or browsing. Only time I notice the difference is when I download games on Steam but I am willing to wait. I realize people's options vary a lot from place to place so this might not apply to everyone and some people might need to consider upload speeds as well. Also your actual speeds don't always match the 'advertised' speeds. But in general I think some people are irrationally afraid of slow internet to the point where they don't even do research to see if a slower plan makes sense for them.
TLDR you probably only need internet speeds faster than 25 mpbs if you are streaming 4k or uploading large files like videos.
