Angieslist used to charge for memberships. In 2016 they switched to a free model. I just discovered while helping out a family member that they also (and this wasn't widely advertised) "upgraded" preexisting paying members to "Gold" or "Platinum" accounts that actually cost more than the previous $35/yr. If you were a paying member:
1) Check your statements to see if they were auto-billing you. In this case the bill jumped from $35/yr to $56/yr just when things became "free".
2) If you were charged, their policy allows a full refund within 30 days if you cancel/downgrade to "green" free membership. You can do this quite painlessly in online chat. I can't say what would happen if you demanded a refund going further back.
Always check your statements for sketchy recurring charges!
