I have been recording fuel logs and maintenance since day 1. In the same theme as the other recent posts, here is my data:

2009 Scion tC (5-speed manual)

Purchase price w/ TTL: $17,620 in July 2008. (no sales tax in my state)

Total mileage today: 138,994

Total cost of gas: $15,161.10

  • Lifetime average gas mileage: 29.2
  • Total gallons used: 4,756.9
  • Average price per gallon: $3.18

Total cost of maintenance: $2,499.82

Scheduled maintenance performed:

  • Tires: $1,334 (Includes an extra set of wheels and one set of studless snow tires which I swap for winter use)
  • Oil changes: 25 oil changes, total cost $528.59
  • Other scheduled maintenance: $325.02 (brake fluid, trans fluid, air filters, cabin filters, serpentine belt, spark plugs, wipers, etc)
  • Unscheduled maintenance: $312.21
  • Note: there was no warranty work needed or performed on this car when it was in the warranty period.

Unscheduled maintenance:

  • Water pump replaced at 110k when it was found to be leaking ($129)
  • LED 3rd brake light replaced ($101)
  • One piece of broken interior trim on the hatch ($69).
  • A broken wheel stud, and a few bulbs.

Residual value: approx $5,000 (private market value, not KBB)

Total cost of ownership: $30,280.92 (Purchase price - Residual Value + Gas Cost + Maintenance Cost)

  • Total cost per mile: $0.218/mile (21.8 cents)
  • Total cost per mile (depreciation): $0.091 (9.1 cents)
  • Total cost per mile (gas): $0.109 (10.9 cents)
  • Total cost per mile (maintenance): $0.018 (1.8 cents)

I have not recorded insurance cost. I haven't kept track of this. We pay very little for insurance.

I do all my own maintenance. Being good at troubleshooting has saved me lots of money -- one issue I solved for free, for example, would have had most owners replacing a transmission because it was tricky to diagnose. It is EXPENSIVE to be at the mercy of a mechanic.

I have missed four fill-ups over the life of the car, so the gas totals and mileage totals are using the actual car mileage and the averages from all the other fill-ups. There may be a little fudged math here because of it.
