I know this isn't my typical post, but I thought some of you might be interested. I got some fun back surgery in august and took a year of from school. Along with posting here I've spent my time thrifting in NYC.

Thrifting anywhere is really a matter of how frequently you go. You don't have to live in NYC to get good stuff at goodwill and other thrifts, but I would say it's rather difficult it super rural areas. I've spent a bit of time thrifting in south VT and It's pretty damn hard. The three basic rules I have are, 1 Don't expect to find gold every time. You will have days or weeks even with absolutely nothing. 2 Never get something just to get it. A lot of thrift store clothing can seem super cool and unique, but if you really don't need it don't get it. Obviously this rule isn't firm for me, but If i got everything I liked at goodwill id be spending far too much money. 3. This rule goes for buying anything used, look VERY Carefully at the whole item. I can't tell you how many times i saw a nice shirt or coat and got it immediately, only to find later that it had holes or stains in places I hadn't seen. This is even more important if you plan on selling any of this.

Also for thrifting in any major city, stay away from the trendier neighbourhoods. I've tried thrifting in soho and lower manhattan and it's simply too picked over. You will have better chances in areas of the city with wealth, but no fashion conscious people. I've found my best stuff in 2 goodwills on the upper west side. More expensive thrifts such as housing works can be good, but they research their items, so be prepared to pay a bit more than a goodwill or salvation army.

All in all my best advice for thrifting is to go for a short time every day and check the new stuff. Find a shop that's on your way home from work. Stop in for 5 minutes and check new things. This will get you a lot farther than going once or twice a month and looking through the whole store for hours.

I also thought I'd share my top 5 Finds so far! Hope you Enjoy.

1 Billy Reid Astor Coat $18.99

Found this coat in Mid November and fell in love with it right away. Kept me warm throughout the winter. This coat has the most beautiful lining and detailing Ive ever seen on a coat.

2 Yohji Yamamoto Black Shirt $7.99

This is probably the least exciting Item on this list, but I love it all the same. Incredible shirt with a perfect collar. In very good condition for something of this quality. Most of the higher end items at goodwill and other thrifts tend to be rather worn, so I was very happy to find this in such good condition.

3 APC Petit New Standard Jeans $4.99

These were beautifully faded and fit me like a charm. These were my first pair of raw jeans and got me rightfully addicted to raw denim! Had to get the pocket replaced, so thats probably why they were donated. Wish I had that kind of cash. All in all ran me about 20 for tailoring and all.

4 Alden Indy Boots $14.99

Got these today, and they motivated me to make this post. Lovely pair of boots and my first real pair of boots, timbs sure as hell don't count. Really love how well the leather has aged, and feel bad for whoever gave these up. Probably gonna get the heels replaced cause one is super worn and makes me walk funny in them. These should last me a really long time!

5 1962 Levis Denim Jacket $15.99

I am almost certain that this jacket was donated my accident. Someone wore this religiously for a long time and its been repaired at least 3 separate times. This is the most beautiful piece of denim I have ever owned and I will try my hardest to make it last. Looking close at how the denim has worn is just beautiful and to me this really is a work of art.

Sorry if this is not at all related to r/FMF, but I wanted to share, and hope you enjoy! Thanks
