I’ll try to keep this as concise as possible but apologize in advance if this gets a bit long. I live in Maryland and, thus, this is relevant to its state laws.
I work in a highly-specialized role within a medical lab with a lot of technical responsibilities, which I am the only person capable of doing within my department (or the entire lab for that matter). My department has not had a true supervisor for the past year and a half and, in the interim, I have assumed pretty much all the supervisor responsibilities without having the official title, in addition to continuing my other job duties.
My lab director came to me last week and said she wants to reclassify my position to officially make me manager of my department, with 10 FTEs reporting to me; however, I would still be responsible for my technical duties since they do not want to backfill my position. Essentially, they are trying to fulfill the need for a lab manager without creating a new position for it, and having me do two jobs.
I am definitely interested in the opportunity but do not want to get burned if I accept. I want to negotiate at least a 30% pay increase (the way I see it, they would still be saving money compared to if they created a new position for this and had to pay another full salary plus benefits, plus I will be the only manager in the lab with so many technical responsibilities), and want to be assured that I can restructure the department slightly since the current structure is causing significant problems that would cause me major headaches if I was in an official manager position.
Are my requests reasonable? If they do not match my requests, is there a legal way they could manage to force me into the new position anyways? Can I be fired for turning it down if I do not see it as a fair deal? I’m excited about this potential promotion, but appreciate some outside perspective to keep me level. Thanks in advance!
