I'm in a new home and went to replace the current thermostat with a nest. I removed the plate and noticed all the wires were stuck encased together by a foam-like putty. I tried chipping away at it the best I could but I'm worried about breaking a wire. At this rate though, it feels like I'll need to tug it out and get new wires.http://ift.tt/2nGSD3n (after originally pulling off the old plate. apologies for the shadow) http://ift.tt/2BYDjTN (having nipped as much as I could from it but eventually giving up and putting the old thermostat back on for now).Does anyone know what this stuff is? Does anyone have a good suggestion for safely separating the wires out of it? And if not, how bad is it if I need to replace the wiring to get rid of it? I've never done something like that. via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2nMTQVO
