I had to recently rip up some older wood floor in my house. Short story is the wood laid on short tubafors (2x4) called screeds which were attached to the foundation by tar, which was also the moisture barrier. The screeds were moldy so had to be tossed and we managed to chip up the tar already. I am having a very difficult time though finding any sort of how-to for rebuilding this floor. Tar and screed does not seem to be a popular method since the advent of the internet. I would really rather not build a plywood subfloor or fill with cement. The original floor lasted 50 years with no issues until Harvey peed on it.I understand the screeds must be placed on the tar immediately after it is poured hot, and then the wood is nailed to screed. As far as laying wood floor goes, run the planks lengthwise along the long edge of the room. I understand i have to cure the wood planks in the room they will be laid in. I have unanswered questions though. How do you ensure the screeds are level? Is there a kind of tar i can use that doesnt need to be heated to high temps? What kind of wood should be used for the screeds (standard stud?)? What spacing needs to be between the screeds for 3/4 inch wood? How long does the tar take to cure? Does it stink for a long time? via /r/DIY http://ift.tt/2DRzMN9
