My boss recently got fired and his position has become available. Looking at the job description, I am confident I can do the job even better. However, due to internal politics, I am very unlikely to get the job. Our group is very flat and I’d be very upset if one of my peers became my new boss. The same would happen if I got the promotion. The hiring managers know this and are looking for an external candidate. Should I still apply and send a message that I am ready for greater responsibilities. Or is this likely to backfire and paint me as someone too ambitious and out of touch with company politics?
