Hello all!

I'm relatively active on this sub, but this is my first time posting.

I am finishing up my second Master's degree in the humanities and am awaiting letters from various institutions for my PhD. I am in (at least in my field) the very envious position of having absolutely zero student loan debt and a chunk of money in the bank (**I'll talk about how in detail below the post if you care). From what I've heard from PhD students at my institution, which is a place I would love to stay given the opportunity, you have the ability to negotiate PhD stipends and leverage offers from other schools in order to obtain more money. I've never done anything even close to that before. If anyone has done this before, I was hoping for some possible advice. It's a minimum of 4.5-5 years at the same level of pay, so I'd really like to get the most I possibly can.

**I did my undergrad in Georgia, which has the Hope scholarship. If you maintain an 3.3+ GPA at a public university within the state, tuition is free. Due to a period of pretty dire financial need in my family I also received Pell. I used this to pay for housing. I maintained a job during undergrad as well. I've also TA'd every semester I was in college. For both my Master's, I've received tuition waivers and have kept a non-academic job in addition to my coursework. I try to live frugally and it's been good to me.
