I'm helping a foreign national negotiate life in the US. He's here in the US as a visiting scholar. He's married and has one child, 2 years old (who was born in the US on a previous stay).

He stay is coming to an end. He had $10,000 in cash he'd like to leave in the US for at least a couple years perhaps as long as until his kid's probably return. However he may want to pull it back to his home country at some point as well.

So where to park this? He like it to grow at least a little bit. On the other hand it's not something he's going to want to go through the hassle of filing a US tax return on every year because it generates a 1099. Or worse yet gets hit with some huge penalty in 10 years time because he didn't pay taxes on it.

Any simple easy to do methods like "dump it into an index fund"?

I don't mind helping him move it around once or twice after he goes back. But I have no interest in filing a return for him for the next 16 years.

Thoughts?
