I have been interested in BIFL pants for quite some time, but most of the offerings suggested here were either work pants or didn't have a desirable aesthetic. I want something that stands up to everyday wear, and has a minimal and elegant aesthetic appropriate for the office.

I learned about Outlier about a year ago, but hesitated because of the price, $188, and my pants at the time, Levi's 508s, were working just fine. Over the course of the year, both pairs of 508s developed holes near the four way seam in the crotch. These Strong Dungarees have a gussetted crotch and are made of a substantial a 9.5 oz/yard 96% nylon/ 4% elastane blend they call Strongtwill that is also hydrophobic. I expect them to last much longer than the 508s and look comparatively better over time. The manufacturer claims they are built to last a long time, but don't know for sure how long because a pair has not worn out for as long as they have been making them. I don't know exactly how long they have been making this particular model, but they have been in business since 2008.

I am going to attempt to wear one pair for a year straight. I will post a six month, and a one year update. During that time, they will be subjected to hours of sitting at a desk per day, at least 40-80 minutes of walking per day, and the occasional bike ride (part of the reason Outlier designed these with a gussetted crotch).

Obligatory pics (pardon the low quality images and processing artifacts):

  • On
  • Fly(the color variation is a result of brightening the image. The color is very even because the fabric is not dyed)
  • Pocket (again, attempted to brighten the image to show detail and the color appears washed out)

Edit: Added pics and formatting
