I cut a family member's hair, and he cuts my hair. One of the pleasant surprises is that it's really not an exact science. I just try to put a few layers about an inch towards the ends (roughly, lifting the pieces that are higher on the scalp and cutting them progressively shorter). The only tool I have is a scissors. And it's very approximate. He says he likes when I cut his hair so that's all that matters.
And when he cuts mine, it's a bob, straight across.
