Hi all, I am in a 3 year relationship with my girlfriend, so thoughts have come about committing to the relationship. However, there are a few things that I would really like to take care before taking such endeavor - one is my GF student debt, which she has been avoiding ever since I've met her.
She hasn't really shown me how much she owes but i estimate its between 45k and 65k, and I'm afraid that if so, she's not taking into account the accrued interest over the years, which makes me fear it could be more. On the "bright" side, her paychecks are being garnished (i asked her to find out what the garnishment deductions meant from HR, and i believe they told her its from her student loans) so I believe she's paying back to some extent.
In the meantime, I've tried to think about ways for her to pay back her loan and hopefully increase her credit score over the long term. I came across the 529 College savings plan which lets you invest and be tax free IF you put the money towards college tuition.
Would this be a valid way to help pay the loan as well? Do you have any other suggestions on how to approach the situation?
